This image shows a view of the glands (the kitten and the cat) within the endometrium of the uterus that were observed during examination of a biopsy obtained from a woman with multiple polyps.

An endometrial polyp is a lump that protrudes from the surface lining of the uterine cavity. Polyps can vary in size and are often vascularized which can lead to heavy bleeding during the menstrual phase of the menstrual cycle or irregular bleeding (spotting) during the cycle. Aside from this abnormal bleeding, they are often asymptomatic, however, if they develop near the uterine tubes they can block the entrance to the tubes which will have an affect on fertility while their presence in the body of the uterus can affect implantation of a fertilized egg and therefore increase risk of miscarriage.

Due to the fact that the polyps protrude from the surface of the uterus, they can be observed using ultrasound and they can be removed surgically and examined with a microscope to determine if they are cancerous or not. Most polyps removed are benign (non-cancerous) growths but once removed, they frequently grow back.
