September 29th, 2017 – 9th of Tishrei, 5778

istodayajewishholiday:

Today is Erev Yom Kippur— Yom Kippur, the holiest of Jewish holidays, begins at sundown tonight.

Yom Kippur is a day of atonement, and although solemn contains tones of joy.  Generally one does not wish a Jewish person to have a “Happy Yom Kippur,” opting rather for “Have an easy fast” or “Have a meaningful fast.”

In preparation for atonement, and for the fast of Yom Kippur, it is
custom to eat heartily. The Talmud states that when one eats and drinks
in preparation for Yom Kippur, it is as they fasted on the 9th and 10th
of Tishrei.

Check when your fast begins here, be sure to set the correct location!

Today is the 9th of the Ten Days of Return.
