“NHS under fire after announcing obese patients will not get non-urgent surgery until they lose weight”.
Fuuuuuuuuck, seriously? So fat people get to suffer unless they are dying?
“Both CCG’s will also require smokers to have quit for eight weeks before they are referred for surgery. A breath test will be used to detect the levels of carbon monoxide in their blood.”
Holy shirt. This is a mess.
It’s misdirection. Instead of blaming the Government for the fact that they’re deliberately and systematically driving the NHS into the ground via lack of funding, they’ve got people focusing on who deserves healthcare.
The answer is simple. Every single person deserves adequate healthcare. Every single person, the circumstances are irrelevant.
The NHS isn’t failing because people are fat, or because people smoke, or because of immigrants. The NHS is failing because the Government WANTS it to fail. This despite the fact that it’s one of the most efficient services in the world.
Also, the reason they’re throwing fat people under the bus here is as follows:
When you have a significant layer of fat, your surgery carries a shitton more risks than if you don’t. Its just the truth that it is way more riskier and takes much longer to perform surgery on a fat body than on a thin body.
So, because the NHS is lacking resources, its not performing non-urgent surgeries on fat people because those take the most resources. It’s a bad thing of course, but one that does not stem entirely from fatphobia. The fact that the NHS even has to consider which patients not to perform surgery on is the crucial aspect.
Ummm, making people LOSE huge amounts of weight or be in pain/discomfort IS fatphobic.
Not to mention that many non-urgent medical issues get more complicated the longer you go on and there are many experts saying that delaying surgery on fat people while you give them to lose weight will actually cost MORE money.
Not to mention, the argument that “it’s hard to operate on fat people” fails miserably considering how much they’re also pushing for weight loss surgeries.
It’s their fucking job to learn how to treat EVERYONE, fat people included, in med school instead of shrugging and turn us away because “it’s too hard to do”.
It IS sizeism, so please stop excusing it.
