Incredibles 2 solidified for me that my main issue with superheroes is they’re a solution to the wrong problem. The entire thesis of superheroes is that the biggest problem facing American society is crime, and thats not even remotely true. Crime rates have been dropping for decades now. Poverty and lack of health care is killing a lot more people. But stoking fear of crime sells a lot of guns, and encourages racism and xenophobia, and convinces us to ignore a lot of bigger issues like massive inequality and corruption and our governments evil actions around the world.

You have mythological gods walking the earth and you think they should be chasing purse-snatchers? Isnt that kind of bizzare?

#of course in every story the heroes are devoted to preventing street crime#and per the story thats what they spend most of their time doing#but we dont see much of that part!#instead we skip straight to the also godlike supervillian so we can inflate the danger#and reinforce how much we NEED heroes#for a problem that doeant actually exist! there arent supervillians trying to destroy the world!#the actual danger is sitting in the fucking white house!#but stay afraid of home invasions by scary immigrants and keep buying those guns!#in conclusion superheroes are cop propoganda and a real superman would be busting up ICE detention camps the end
