I don’t like the attempted invasion of Dorne. I don’t like what Daeron I did and I think that the Targaryens were utter autocrats. But in terms of merciless war, he was being a twisted version of smart. If you’re an autocrat, you’re a moron if you don’t try to conquer the large power sitting to the south of you.
The Dornish were a minority, but they MORE THAN HELD THEIR OWN against the Westerosi and were not, in fact, oppressed. They had better battle tactics post-dragon; ultimately, it was a war of equal tacticians and powers. The fact that people were pissed off after they were brought in is akin to if Putin personally assassinated the president following Dump (in a hypothetical war that the US started, granted), then because the president after that married Putin’s niece, Russia was allowed enormous concessions and didn’t even have to acknowledge that they meddled in the election OR that Putin murdered the president. And were given several important seats in the Cabinet.
Dorne was not Yemen or Libya or Palestine or even Raj India in this case. Despite them being non-white-coded, Dorne was RUSSIA. Both in terms of situation and of relative population.
(And the way the soldiers and their grieving, angry families were treated/are treated in fandom is a hell of a lot like how traumatized Vietnam vets were treated back in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Hate the war, don’t blame the conscripted soldiers or their horrible situations afterward.
