Murkowski voted “present” instead of “no” so that one Republican Senator could go to his daughter’s wedding and miss the vote. Isn’t it nice how nice they are to each other. Manchin voted yes, along with the remaining 49 Republicans.
I have no silver lining to offer at this time except this: if Kavanaugh had been confirmed a month ago, as seemed inevitable at the time, he would have been able to pretend that he was a “fair and impartial judge.” He can no longer do that, no matter how many op-eds he publishes in the Wall Street Journal. All this Federalist Society Heritage Foundation bullshit has been revealed through Kavanaugh for what it is: partisan hackery dressed up as intellectual courage. The truth is always useful, though at the moment it’s hard to see the practical application.
Right now the thing to do is redouble our efforts in the midterms. Republicans are already gloating that this will improve their chances. The Washington Post’s hot take is that this will improve Democrats’ chances in the House but hurt them in the Senate. I say fuck you and your hot takes. We will make this hurt Republicans EVERYWHERE.
Give time or give money, whichever you have more of. Don’t accept any media narratives you hear about the midterms, whether they’re reassuring or discouraging. Assume we will need to fight to the last woman right down to the last day. We do and we will.
