Man, imagine if when they decided they needed more women in The Hobbit movies, instead of adding Tauriel and then thrusting her into an awkward love triangle, they carefully read the book to see if any of the thirteen dwarves had no explicitly male pronouns attached to them and made them dwarven women with magnificent beards.

According to this Quora post–warning, it goes stunningly unimaginative in the very last paragraph–Nori, Ori, and Bifur are never referred to as male, which fits in nicely with a snippet from the LotR appendices which said that dwarven women only made up one-third or less of the species.

So Nori, Ori, and Bifur are women. Huge missed opportunity.
