Incredibles 2 solidified for me that my main issue with superheroes is they’re a solution to the wrong problem. The entire thesis of superheroes is that the biggest problem facing American society is crime, and thats not even remotely true. Crime rates have been dropping for decades now. Poverty and lack of health care is killing a lot more people. But stoking fear of crime sells a lot of guns, and encourages racism and xenophobia, and convinces us to ignore a lot of bigger issues like massive inequality and corruption and our governments evil actions around the world.
You have mythological gods walking the earth and you think they should be chasing purse-snatchers? Isnt that kind of bizzare?
“McKellen applauded victims for coming forward about sexual harassment saying “it’s sometimes very difficult for victims to do that.” He added, “‘I hope we’re going through a period that will help to eradicate it altogether.””
“‘I assume *nothing but good* will come out of these revelations, even though some people get wrongly accused — there’s that side of it as well,” he said.”
“McKellen also addressed the allegations surrounding Kevin Spacey […] saying that the way he chose to come out was “reprehensible because it linked alleged underage sex with a declaration of sexuality.””
Artist Carves Wooden Rope Sculpture From a Tree Trunk
Artist Maskull Lasserre indulges in sculptural practice that strikes a delicate balance between hard-edged industrial media and a delicately poetic resolve, blending the two beautifully.
Furiosa isn’t the female action hero we’re used to. Furiosa doesn’t have a dad who taught her boxing or five brothers who taught her how to fix cars. Furiosa wasn’t a tomboy growing up, who preferred to play with the boys. Furiosa isn’t avenging the murder of her husband/brother/father or hunting down a rapist.
Furiosa comes from a community of women. She was raised by women. She works her way up through enemy ranks until she’s in a position to rescue women. Furiosa is here for women, she is here with women, and she is here because of women. Her rage, her ruthlessness, her courage – these are all things she learned from women, and from being a woman.
I reported a racist coworker and due to the gossip that spread afterwards, I was deemed the instigator and “too risky” to keep and so they let me go
