The trend with fandoms nowadays seems to be:

I feel like a lot of hardcore accusations of problematic and offensive content that get thrown at media that was previously lauded as progressive come from a few sources; first, the creators are often a lot more accessible than the creators of mainstream media. you can message rebecca sugar on twitter personally to call her a racist bitch, but you can’t do the same to, say, jj abrhams or another large-scale creator. likewise, you can’t stand on a streetcorner and scream at people until they agree to stop watching law and order, but you can certainly bully large groups of people online until they stop supporting an independent creator.

second, the fandoms that tend to form around progressive media tend to be younger, more volatile, looking to media and fandom as forms of activism. mainstream media they can write off as garbage, but progressive niche media that makes a sincere attempt to represent marginalized folks must be Absolutely Perfect. the idea that a piece of media can have good parts and bad parts, that it can try and only partially succeed, but that that partial success is still worth something, is completely lost on many young fans. either its irredeemable garbage or its the literal messiah, there’s no in-between. so if a show falls short of perfect, as is inevitable, then it goes straight into the “total garbage” pile and must be condemned by the masses.

genuinely trying to represent certain groups and making a few missteps is not the same thing as being ignorant or malicious. making a sincere effort to mean something to folks who don’t get a lot of things made for them is something to be proud of. would you rather go back to the times when fucking nothing got made for us? when the only characters we saw that we could relate to were only there to be made fun of? you’re spoiled by a rush of new creators who took “go make your own thing then” to heart and set out to make content for people like them, you have the gall to look at what they’re trying to do and spit on it for not being better. no creator owes you shit, no creator has to bow to a bunch of teenage bullies who do nothing but demand and harass, that’s all there is to it.

Okay, so here’s the gist of it from what I can remember off the top of my head, and other folks feel free to contribute!

Cats are like us because they:

• Experience sensory overload (not sure about underload)
• Communicate in ways that folks (who only know about dogs usually) don’t understand and think is them being assholes

• Really do think existing in the same room with you both doing your own thing is hanging out

Apparently some douche canoe kidnapped some of their people back in the 1800′s and fucked off with them to display them in a circus type situation. I understand the adults died (no immunities) So of course they don’t want to deal with you. Oral history can be a strong thing. 5 or 6 people out of a small population are going to be remembered. Those remaining will take action immediately if they feel threatened. They have every right to feel that way and take appropriate action.

Folk are screaming about why aren’t the tribes people being held on murder charges. For one, dude broke THEIR laws, and the laws of the country that holds jurisdiction over the island. No contact means no contact. The authorities are trying to figure out how to get dude’s body. Not so much because they think he should have a proper burial, but because they don’t want his germ and virus ridden ass to decimate the island population.

I understand that the fishermen that gave the idiot passage are going to be brought under charges. I don’t know if it will be for murder, or for bribery or what, but dude was the reason for his own demise. Dude had white boy can’t take no for an answer syndrome. People always gloss over how mentally damaging it can be to work in retail. I fucking hate that whenever I say “I could never work in retail again” someone has to reply “You snowflake millennials can’t take a starter job because you have to INTERACT with other people” No. Fuck you. I’ve worked as a planetarium host. I’ve worked as a public speaker. I’ve worked as a tutor and as a student teacher. I can work with people. I can work with crowds. Retail was fucking different. Retail was being treated as a subhuman. Retail was being treated so poorly that you have anxiety attacks before work. Having to work retail was a factor in my last suicide attempt. If I hear you say one fucking word about retail workers playing the victim I will personally break every bone in your body. Fuck You.

The holidays are coming up. Retail workers are going to be spiraling into a nightmare beyond human comprehension. If you’ve worked retail, you know this. If you haven’t, be aware of it. Please be kind to every retail worker you come across. Please be patient and understanding. It is misery out there.

I don’t know why people have to treat retail workers so poorly. They’re human, LIKE YOU. Their boss is WORSE than yours (my retail bosses were terrible, my current boss is amazing). They don’t want to be there on the holiday but they have to because YOU insist on shopping. So dig deep, find those manners you were taught in kindergarten, and say please & thank you.

And if I am in the store and I see you being crappy to a retail worker I WILL CALL YOU OUT AND SHAME YOU. I’m so SICK of how our society seems to have forgotten basic decency and manners. It’s not hard to be polite.

Even more importantly than polite, be PATIENT. You’re the one choosing to shop at the busiest times of year, and before you get all “well they should have more people on the registers!” stop and think for a damn minute. Do you honestly believe the cashier ringing you out is responsible for the schedule? They aren’t.

Cashiers have no say in the schedule or who does and doesn’t show up. They have no say in how much stock gets ordered or how fast it sells out. They have no say in the stores policies. It is not the cashier’s fault. Don’t take it out on them.
