Honestly, there’s really no single election that can stop this, but obviously keeping the party bent on omnicide out of power is preferable. The changes required are so radical that it’s doubtful any politician from any nation would be willing to enforce them. We’re talking about making electricity prices so high that you’d barely be keeping the lights on. There’s also the fact that China is far and away the biggest CO2 producer (and no, it’s not all from CO2-intensive industries we outsource to them, that only accounts for a small amount of their emissions.) Really nothing can happen without China’s thorough cooperation, which confuses our American instinct to consider ourselves the center of the universe.

There was a big headline the other day that 100 companies are responsible for 71% of emissions, which of course caused everyone to say that this is a problem that can be solved with a few guillotines. But the headlines didn’t mention that the company that was far and away the biggest polluter was China’s state-owned coal conglomerate

Here’s the full list. But as you can see from just the top 15, American companies are only a small part of this equation, the first four are all nationalized monopolies from authoritarian states. I realize this goes against the extreme US-centrism of both the left and right, but this is the reality, climate change is happening from all sorts of different economies and governments.

I saw people arguing that sure, China might be the top producer of emissions *now* (and in the last couple decades) but if you go back to the start of *industrialization* clearly the US and other western nations have been the biggest polluters. I guess the point is that we should stop trying to do anything about emissions in the present day and work on building a time machine.

Way too many people reduce issues down to moral culpability. No one is talking about who bears the sin of climate change when all is said and done, they’re talking about who the current biggest culprits are and which groups of people have to make the most changes. Some people actually want results, not everything is about extracting repentance.
