This is from the forecast discussion of Major Hurricane Florence from this afternoon. As a meteorologist, when I saw this, my heart sank. They don’t use wording like this for every storm.

Florence is going to be a devastating. There will be huge amounts of flooding, both from inland rain and from costal storm surge. Winds are going to be some of the strongest you can get from a hurricane. People within the path of this storm could lose everything.

If you know anyone who lives on the North or South Carolina coast, tell them that if there’s an evacuation ordered, they need to get the hell out. Do not take chances with this one.

Reblogging again to add a list of things/essentials from a friend who lives on the NC coast and has weathered hurricanes and other bad weather:

– toiletries (paper towels, toilet paper, baby wipes for “bathing” in case power & water go out)

– water, 1 gallon per person for at least 7 days (err on the side of caution if possible); more if you have animals!!

– non perishable food items, if you get canned food make sure you have a can OPENER

– pet food & supplies, if you’re really worried about flooding it may be beneficial to get life vests for your pets, also find a way to put identification information on them!

– batteries

– flashlights

– battery packs for cell phones charged up in case of loss of power

– filled cars with gas & filled gas can(s)

– get all essentials like passports, important docs, and cherished items together & ready to go

– just in case, determine a way to get onto your roof safely

– fill bathtubs with water so if water isn’t available you can refill the toilets to keep flushing and keep waste to a minimum

– if you have dogs look up how to make a makeshift potty, you can use a hard baby pool and some sod potentially

– check your prescriptions and get them refilled now if necessary

– if you’re taking insulin and lose power, fill a separate cooler for your insulin than the one you would use for food. Insulin > food

If your place begins to flood get the hell OUT of the water!!! There is no telling if you have a live electrical charge in there!

Do not cross any water you cannot see the bottom of the ground in. I’m serious.

COME VISIT FANCY’S FUNDRAISER!

Hello everyone! This is Fancy.  She is a ~12-13-week-old dilute tortoiseshell kitten my girlfriend found on the street while delivering pizza.  Her long coat makes it hard to see how thin she is, but she is very thin. Her bones are so prominent that we have to cuddle her wrapped in a towel or she can’t get comfortable. (Yes, that is exactly as heartbreaking as it sounds.)

In addition to being dangerously underweight, she is suffering from an abscessed bite wound and some sort of problem with her tail, as well as a heavy parasite load that is giving her runny poop issues and sapping her energy.  She is too small to even have the shots given to babies half her age.

Despite all this, Fancy is heart-meltingly sweet.  She loves people.  She talks a lot and even vocalizes softly while purring herself to sleep.  She is alert but she tires easily because she has no energy reserves and right now she basically only sleeps, eats, poops, sleeps, cuddles, talks about everything she does, eats some more, and sleeps.

She looks rough now but with some TLC she will be a beautiful cat with a nice, low-maintenance medium-length silky coat and vibrant lemon-lime eyes.  We want to find her a forever home, but we can’t do that until she is healthy enough!

We took her to the vet on Monday, July 30 and she has been wormed, treated for earmites, and tested clean for FeLV and heartworms, and her abscess has been cleaned out, which is all good, but she has some challenges. 

The vet says that at 3.6 lbs. she is ½ to ¾ of a pound underweight, which is a big difference when you are as small as she is. Imagine being 30 lbs. underweight. That’s scary.  This is the biggest hurdle right now.  The odds are absolutely in her favor, this is a problem we can fix, but she is still severely malnourished and that presents a very real risk.

Also her tail doesn’t work so great.  She can only move the first inch or so closest to her behind, and sometimes it’s hard to get it out of the way when she uses the litter box.  If it doesn’t improve as she gets stronger the vet wants to take X-rays to see what’s causing it and what needs to be done.

She has a checkup in 10 days but right now we cannot afford to take her to it, let alone pay for any more unexpected urgent treatment, because today’s vet appointment blew through everything we had saved back.

Will you please help us give her a second chance by visiting her fundraiser and sharing this post?  Fancy is a brave and strong young lady who wants to be healthy!  She wants to go home with someone who will make her their special little girl forever!

I’ve set a goal of $700 to cover what we had to pay today for testing, wound treatment, and medication, and the things we had to get to take care of her (piddle pad crate liners, her own toys, some special food to get her weight up, baby wipes to clean up her bottom, all that sort of thing) plus some extra for her next checkup, her shots, and some extra for imaging or in case something unexpected comes up (most likely another abscess, a respiratory infection, or gastritis).  We have other cats, one of whom has kidney disease and needs specialized food that costs kind of a lot, so this is putting a big strain on us financially.

She deserves so much better.  Please help us make her second chance as great as it can be.

Cat mom needs help!

This is Moonlite. She will be 11 in August. She also has dementia. Until recently, it’s been manageable just by me comforting her. But as of this week, I can’t comfort her, she’s sad constantly and I don’t know what to do. I stay home with her nearly 24/7 because she gets lost and disoriented so frequently. Today she has started getting aggressive and attacked my arm for the first time ever. I’m out of work and me and my husband live on a single income. I NEED to get her to a vet. I’ve heard there may be some medications or diet changes they can give her, but you have to go through the vet to get them. I didn’t want to have to post this but I’ve been sobbing all night because she has been my best friend in the entire world for almost 11 years. I bottle fed this baby. I just have to try and see if there is anything they can do to improve her quality of life. She is a good girl and deserves only good things. So I’m having a divination/witch sale.

Hello everybody!

That’s me and I need a breast reduction. I wear a bra size 32F, something not commonly found anyplace you can pick a bra up for less than $70. My breasts weigh me down, they are tender and painful at all times, and they give me extreme back, neck, and shoulder pain. Add all of this to the dysphoria I feel as a butch nb lesbian, and you can see why I desperately need a breast reduction.

Unfortunately, my insurance will not provide any kind of pre-approval, even to tell me for sure that they would not cover this procedure. My surgeon feels that, going by the stated guidelines for my insurance regarding these procedures, they would be very unlikely to cover the costs, and I would only find out either way after billing insurance for my surgery after the fact. If they did not accept my claim – which they likely would not – I could be left with a bill of around $50,000 in medical fees. Obviously, I can’t afford this. However, if I bill my procedure as cosmetic and pay for it myself, it would only cost $8,165.

Regardless, I don’t have the money either way. I just got hit with a huge vehicle repair bill recently which drained me of $3,000. Given another few years, I could probably get that money back and even pay for my procedure, but that would destroy my life savings ever since graduating high school in 2013. As much as I feel I need this surgery, not only to ease my physical symptoms but to calm my dysphoria, I can’t justify that extreme depletion of my savings for both school and my future in general.

I’m hoping to reach my goal this summer, by the end of August. I don’t honestly know if that’s possible, but I hate the thought of entering a new year of life as a 24 year old, stuck with the same painful chest. I can’t run, clothes that fit properly are hard to find, and every time I glance in the mirror I’m reminded of the literal burden I carry. I really can’t overstate how dysphoric my chest makes me. I can’t even wear a binder because of the disproportionate nature of my chest. I’ve tried everything I could think of to minimize my chest, from making binders myself from old shirts to trying transtape (which would probably work for someone with a more proportional chest, but again, I’m cursed so it doesn’t work for me) to just layering as much as possible. None of these are viable long term solutions, nor do they do anything to address the physical pain I endure. Please consider donating, or at least sharing with your friends! Help Hadley Breathe!

Southern California Siamese Rescue rescued Hadley from a high kill shelter in in December, 2017. She had been adopted and returned to the shelter for being sick with a URI (upper respiratory infection).

Once in foster care at SoCSR, Hadley seemed to recover from her URI, but then it came back. At one point foster mom had to syringe feed her because she was not eating. When cats and kittens can’t smell, they don’t want to eat.

Hadley’s breathing continued to be restricted and foster mom noticed her making ‘snorkeling’ sounds in her attempts to breathe. It was time for a vet visit. The vet suggested a CT image be done so we could actually see what was going on in her nasal passage. The CT was done in the beginning of January. Hadley was a trooper and breezed through the procedure. The CT showed an obstruction in what should be an open space past the end of her nasal passage. It was suggested that Hadley be given time to grow a little bit so it would be easier to do the procedure to remove the polyp.

Hadley has seen a specialist again and it appears that the polyp has grown since the CT image was done. Her breathing is getting more difficult for her, she mostly breathes with her mouth open, and she can’t shake the URI which is likely due to the polyp. Surgery has been scheduled for Monday, February 26. Without the surgery, her chances of survival are not good. At only five months old, Hadley deserves a chance to live a full life.

The surgery is a bit complicated. The surgeon will go in through the inside of the roof of her mouth. Hadley will be hospitalized for two to three days after the surgery so she can be monitored. Since there will be stitches in the roof of her mouth, she will need a temporary feeding tube.

Most of us take breathing for granted – it is something a healthy body does automatically, without thought. Please keep Hadley in your thoughts and prayers for a successful surgery so she too can breathe without effort.

When you have to use the original meme to get a point across

Walk out. There is no such thing as a permanent record, but there is such a thing as ‘the entire administration gets sued and fired’.

I want to add again that schools are allowed to punish you for missing class to protest, but it has to be the standard punishment for missing class (as though you were missing for any other reason). If they would not normally suspend you for 3 days for missing class, then they cannot do it for this. It is a violation of your first amendment rights to punish you more harshly for protesting than for any other reason for an absence from class.  [source – ACLU] 

If your school is threatening you with a punishment that is beyond what would normally be given for an unexcused class absence, you should contact your local ACLU chapter. You should be able to find the standard disciplinary actions for excused and unexcused absences in your student handbook; if the punishment for protesting is different from the punishment listed in the handbook, then you need to contact that ACLU. You can find your local ACLU chapter by clicking here.
