apparently the EPA said asbestos is “safe” again, which is good news for asbestos memes, and bad news for literally everyone else

Someone may be asking about what asbestos actually IS so I’ll write up a quick summary.

Asbestos are a kind of natural silicate fiber. They’re really durable and resist heat and fire really well, which is why people had started using them to make buildings and fabrics fireproof back during the 20th century. Hence things like asbestos electric hotframe insulation, building insulation, carpeting, curtains, even oven mitts.

The problem with this is that asbestos can and will tear off into microfibers and get into the air, where it’s really easy to breathe in. These fibers though are still mineral, and once they get into the lungs they start shredding through the cell tissues and cause bleeding, inflammation, scarring, and cancer. Hell there’s a disease specifically CALLED asbestosis cause it’s that significant. It’s been banned in the EU for a while, and the US had previously put strong restrictions on its use.

Y’know that “If you or a love one have been affected my mesothelioma, you may be qualified for financial compensation” meme? That’s asbestos. And if state governments don’t start restricting asbestos use in buildings, it may become your problem too.

Oh, and for a chilling thought on this matter… The current residing President does not believe in the negative effects of asbestos, stating in his 1997 book The Art of the Comeback that he believes all of the asbestos restrictions is more or less fearmongering. Want something more recent? How about a 2012 tweet where he flat out says that the World Trade Center wouldn’t have burned down in 9/11 if they didn’t remove the asbestos.

Want something worse? You got it. Here’s an article detailing how Uralasbest, a Russian asbestos company, ships and sells asbestos with a “President Trump stamp of approval” on each package.

OP’s a little misleading, I will note. The EPA hasn’t marked asbestos as safe, but they have made a statement about how they’ll begin allowing asbestos products in manufacturing on a “case by case basis”. Reports seem to show however, that the EPA does not care about air or water pollution when making these risk assessments.

Contact your government representatives right now. What the actual hell is going on here?

The EPA Will No Longer Evaluate the Health Risks of Asbestos Because Trump Believes it’s 100-Percent Safe

The Environmental Protection Agency will no longer evaluate asbestos in homes and businesses as a danger or health risk, as Newsweek
reports.  Scott Pruitt announced the decision last Friday under
President Trump, who believes asbestos is “100 percent safe, once
applied.”

According to the Abestos Nation Campaign,
asbestos kills 12,000 to 15,000 Americans every year.  Fifty-five
countries have completely banned the use of asbestos in any case,
including the United Kingdom, South Africa,
Japan and so on, in spite of which the EPA decided it was no longer
necessary to evaluate the health risks of this chemical.  The EPA will
continue to evaluate and require approval for any new introduction or
use of asbestos in the environment, but let the already-present chemical
remain in schools, houses and public buildings.  This decision comes
shortly after the 2016 amendments to the Toxic Substances Control Act.
These amendments made it mandatory for the EPA to do safety reviews of
dangerous chemicals, such as asbestos, and create public notices of the
safety information for those chemicals.  The amendments also allowed the
EPA to ban the use of asbestos in particular cases.

The EPA’s decision didn’t draw any backlash from the current
administration because it aligns with Trump’s opinions on asbestos — Trump
wrote about the chemical in his 1997 book, The Art of the Comeback
He wrote, “I believe that the movement against asbestos was led by the
mob, because it was often mob-related companies that would do the
asbestos removal.  Great pressure was put on politicians, and as usual,
the politicians relented.”

However, the decision is facing extreme backlash from
organizations such as the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization.  The
President of the organization Linda Reinstein stated, “The end result
will be a seriously inadequate risk evaluation that fails to address
major contributors to the heavy and growing toll of asbestos mortality
and disease in the United States.”  Reinstein sat down with the EPA
Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention’s deputy assistant
administrator Nancy Beck to discuss the decision.  Reinstein was joined
by the International Association of Fire Fighters and AFL-CIO
representatives.  The group was armed with over 100 studies proving the
hazards of asbestos, even in low doses, and documentation showing that
any exposure could cause disease.  Other organizations also reached out
attempting to stop the decision, such as the American Chemistry Council,
but Beck didn’t back down and the decision remained unchanged.

Reinstein said of the situation:

If you don’t evaluate the dangerous legacy of
asbestos you don’t know how much contamination still exists in the
United States.  We know it’s in our homes, schools, workplace and
environment but the average American can’t identify and evaluate the
risk.  We have taken risk evaluation off the table.

A recent report released by Senator Ed Markey from Massachusetts revealed
that the government doesn’t have a record of how many schools contain
asbestos. Congressman Frank Pallone Jr., a ranking member of the Energy
and Commerce Committee, also spoke out against the decision, saying,
“EPA’s refusal to address longstanding concerns around the use and
disposal of asbestos is further proof that Administrator Pruitt will
bend over backwards to help industry, but won’t lift a finger to protect
public health.”

GODDAMMIT

“Let’s Give Americans Lung Cancer Again”

jesus fucking christ

“We need MORE ASBESTOS!

MORE ASBESTOS!

MORE ASBESTOS!”

– Donald Trump, bravely championing the cause of giving people terminal illness with shitty construction materials that have been scientifically proven to be unsafe

The fact that the EPA are ignoring literal decades of findings that show asbestos IS NOT SAFE TO USE just because the president doesn’t believe in facts is another example of how truly fucked America is right now

Seems completely out of left field until I read that Russia produces over 50% of the world’s supply of asbestos

… what?

In 2015, 2 million tonnes
of asbestos were mined worldwide.  The Russian Federation was the
largest producer with about 55% world share followed by China (20%),
Brazil (15.6%), and Kazakhstan (10.8%).

Teacher removed from public education meeting in handcuffs after asking why superintendents get raises but teachers don’t

Deyshia Hargrave is an English teacher at Rene Rost Middle Schools in Vermilion
Parish, Louisiana; on Monday night, she attended a special meeting of
the local school board and, when called upon comment period, politely
asked why the board superintendants had voted themselves a raise while
the teachers in the school district have been subjected to a long-term
pay-freeze.

The superintendent ruled her question out of order and then a deputy
Abbeville city marshal who works in the parish schools dragged her out
of the room, put her in handcuffs and threw her to the floor while
chanting “stop resisting.”

The board of education says it won’t press charges against her. However,
the city is holding her on charges of “remaining after being forbidden”
and “resisting an officer.”

… in the boot, under the boot

Crime where

I guess dissenting it’s a crime now.

It gets better. The school board president can’t fucking handle himself in a goddamn interview, and was getting all pissy about the “threats and obscenities” his office has been getting thanks to “that stupid a** video” and whining about how “everyone wants to side with the poor little woman who got thrown out.”

http://www.wafb.com/story/37231362/alleged-death-threats-social-media-firestorm-ensue-after-teacher-arrested-during-school-board-meeting

Fucker actually says “She made a choice. She could have walked out and nothing would have happened.”

Of course, if you watch the video you will see that she was A) addressed by the board, B) still being spoken to by a board member at the same time the officer was trying to eject her, and C) she did in fact gather her things and walk out peacefully after the board member finished speaking to her.

If anyone else would like to give Vermilion School Board President Anthony Fontana’s office a call and maybe some fresh obscenities to complain about, their number is (337) 893-3973

This is real and happening as we speak.

A few thousands people (mostly of African descent) protested in front of the Lybian embassy in Paris this week so that they would acknowledge what their country is doing and take action.
