TIL that the reason lead levels in children’s blood have dropped 85% in the past thirty years is because of an unknown scientist who fought car companies to end leaded gasoline. He also removed it from paint, suggested its removal from pipes, and campaigned for the removal of lead solder from cans.

Yep.  It also correlates extremely strongly with an increasing decrease of violent crime.  One of the symptoms of low level constant lead exposure is increased aggression and volatility.

“Unknown scientist”? That was Clair Cameron Patterson.

The native Maori people of New Zealand have tattooed their faces for centuries. They had a complex warrior culture before the arrival of Europeans, and suffered under early colonialism, but have experienced a cultural revival since the 60′s.

The marks are called moko, and are etched with chisels instead of needles to leave grooves along with the ink. The true form is sacred, unique to each person, and distinct from European tattoos that mimic that traditional style.

There arent many pictures non combat related that look this badass

Actually most
Tā moko are done with modern tattoo equipment these days, but some people get them done the traditional way. And, as others have said, they’re not for Non-
Māori, as they have specific meanings and significance. If you want a tattoo with Māori

style, you can get a
kirituhi. These avoid any designs associated with particular tribes or famous people you’re not related to.

Kirituhi is a Māori style tattoo either made by a non-Māori tattooer, or made for a non-Māori wearer. Kirituhi has mana of it’s own and is a design telling the unique story of the wearer in the visual language of Māori art and design. Kiri means ‘skin’, and tuhi means ‘to write, draw, record, adorn or decorate with painting’.

Kirituhi is not restricted to only Māori people, and it is a way for Māori to share our cultural arts with people from around the world in a respectful manner, and for non-Māori artists to enjoy our beautiful art form as well. I happily do kirituhi for my clients around the world and it is a privilege to do such work for them.

Kirituhi is no lesser an artform than moko, however it is different and I believe these differences must be acknowledged and respected, so that the integrity of our taonga Māori – moko, is maintained around the world.

Moko is uniquely Māori and it is strictly reserved to be done by Māori, for Māori.

If either the recipient or tattooer do not have Māori whakapapa, then the resulting design is a Māori Style tattoo or kirituhi, NOT moko. The word moko originated from the Māori atua (god) of volcanic activity and earthquakes, Rūaumoko – therefore the origin of tā moko is divine and sacred – to me this is no small thing, nor should it be dismissed.

As my mentor once told me, ‘moko is about 99% culture, and 1% tattoo’.

I don’t care WHAT they use for it – getting something so meaningful tattooed on your fucking FACE makes you braver than any US marine. Hats off.

men weaponize art against women

notable examples of this include:

that one college guy who was going to play the piano on campus until his ex took him back

the game designer who tried to propose to his (now ex) girlfriend via the spider man video game

the song “hey there, delilah”. written abt a girl who was in a relationship w another man

any time a guy tries to use art to manipulate a woman into loving him and/or giving him what he wants, he’s wielding it as a weapon

imma be real with you, this post put my iq in the double digits

i’m glad i could improve it!

Alternate take: men use art to express their emotions, and that’s beautiful.

That one college guy wrote and/or played songs that expressed his emotions in ways he’d never been able to fully express before.

The game designer took a medium he worked in, and one his (now ex) girlfriend enjoyed, and wanted to propose in a way that is both memorable and inclusive of both of them.

The song “Hey There, Delilah” is about a struggling musician in a long-distance relationship with a girl he loves very much, so much so as to express it in a song that would hopefully help him provide some financial support to their relationship, and also to reassure her of his love for her.

Guys will use art far more often to express their affections and emotions than they will to manipulate women.

@beckette Take your hate and leave. Stop trying to stop men from expressing their emotions.

i know you really think you Did That, but none of that is true:

the college guy was literally trying to publicly shame and manipulate a girl who broke up with him into taking him back (he got punched in the head because he was playing the piano on the college campus at like, midnight, or something, and thank god).

the guy, who i have been corrected was not actually  game designer, but just a guy who wanted a favor, was in a relationship that he knew was going downhill. his ex-girlfriend didn’t care about video games and didn’t want him to propose. as a bonus, after he published his story about it, the woman had to deactivate all her social media accounts due to unrelenting harassment.

“hey there delilah” was NOT written about the singer’s girlfriend. she was at most, a friend of his, and was in a relationship with another man. the song included an uncomfortable amount of personal details, and lead to people accusing her of being a cheater.

i fully encourage that everyone, regardless of their gender, express their emotions in a healthy way. the way these emotions are being expressed, at the very least, made the intended targets uncomfortable, and lead to two innocent women being harassed because of the way men twisted the public perception of them.

Hear The Oldest Flute In The World

historical-nonfiction:

In 2008, archaeologists discovered fragments of flutes carved from vulture and mammoth bones at a Stone Age cave site in southern Germany called Hohle Fels. They were carved and played by Homo sapiens. These flutes are ancient, dating back 42,000 to 43,000 years, making them the oldest flutes in the world.

The oldest Homo sapiens flutes, that is. There is at least one flute made by a Neanderthal that is older. Found at a Neanderthal campsite at Divje Babe in northwestern Slovenia, the Neanderthal flute is estimated to be over 43,000 years old and perhaps as much as 80,000 years old.

The video above features Ljuben Dimkaroski, who plays trumpet for the Ljubljana Opera Orchestra, and who helped archaeologists figure out how to play the prehistoric flute. Don’t worry! He is playing a clay replica, not the original.

i think the coolest thing would be to see a new color

right so theres this thing called the bullet shrimp

image

and not only are these things totally badass and stylish

they have 16 colour cones in their vision

us humans only have 3

these things can literally see over 5 times as many colours as we can

literally they can look at what we would see as a completely black space and see thousands of colours we don’t even know exist

do you understand how fuCKING COOL THAT IS

not only that but they can punch a hole in an aquarium tank.

that’s pretty fucking radical.

not only punching through aquarium walls too

these little demon-spawn can punch so hard and so fast that

IT BREAKS WATER PHYSICS

their punches cause water to boil and create a bubble underwater, which kills its prey if it has contact with it, cooking them from the outside

BUT IT DOESN’T EVEN NEED TO MAKE CONTACT

the collapsing bubble sends out a shockwave strong enough to kill anything in a 10 cm diameter due to pure pressure

this fabulous sob is death incarnate and don’t forget that

Even better – the inside of that little bubble before it collapses is over 400 million degrees Kelvin, hotter than the surface of the Sun.

One Punch Shrimp

ONE PAAAAAANCHE!

This straight up sounds like a Pokedex entry

Yeah what the fuck.

Capitalism at its best.  Some role models we should all consider.  I am a fan of Hagen Daz, but after reading this, I need to get me some Cherry Garcia!

I just need to work for them tbh

And they openly support Black Lives Matter. They are GOLD ❤️

they also have an AMAZING dairy free almondmilk ice cream. changed my life

They’ve also gone in front of congress to testify that every shitty business’s claims that minimum wage hikes are bad are complete bullshit

Ben and Jerry have also been arrested for peaceful protest at least one time, so we know they’re the coolest
